Swipe typing for desktops and laptops

Qualified prototype for National Innovation Contest by MoE’s (Ministry of Education) Innovation cell

Swype

Brief

Enable swipe typing on desktops and laptops

Primary Target User

Design and other creative professionals

How might we reduce the time and effort required for typing a document on laptops/ PCs and other input related tasks to increase productivity?

Problem Statement

process note

Our smartphones have introduced us to swipe typing which is very easy to get adapted to and type faster than ever before. However, desktops, laptops and tablets are still in the past in this aspect and Swipe-typing is not enabled on them which saves so much time and effort. It is also more convenient and error free. Swipe Typing was the prime focus of the first iteration of the process.

The second iteration broadened the scope looking at other input functions. Designers and other professionals often use multiple devices in their workflow that clutter the workstation. Their dominant hand switches input devices at short intervals causing unneccesary hassle and productivity drop. They also face wrist related musculoskeletal disorders due to awkward postures for longer working hours.

We used existing technological concepts (graphic tablets) to bring an untapped functionality of swipe typing and better convenience to the user. It is a unique approach of combining the functions of both keyboard and mouse. It has separate functions for the left and right hand that avoids the majority of the switching between devices which hinders productivity.

The console features numerics and shortcuts which are preferred in mechanical format by 90% of the users. The user can seamlessly switch between draw and type mode using the button on the stylus or the console.

The numerics are inspired by the piano and save space while reducing the travelling of fingers needed.
